In the beginning God
Everything began with God, so we can’t correctly understand anything apart from him. Our study of any subject is vain unless we commit ourselves to theology, the study of God.
As I said, theology matters. In his book, The Reformed Pastor, Richard Baxter puts it this way:
Nothing can be rightly known if God be not known; nor is any study well managed, nor to any great purpose, if God is not studied. We know little of the creature till we know it as it stands related to the Creator.
I’ve heard it said that the Bible’s first four words are the Bible’s four most important words. “In the beginning God“ (Ge 1:1). Everything began with God, so we can’t correctly understand anything apart from him. Our study of any subject is vain unless we commit ourselves to theology, the study of God.
