What makes human life sacred?

God created every person equally in his own image. As divine image-bearers, all people have immeasurable value and dignity before God and deserve honor, respect, and protection. Everyone has been created by God and for God.

This being the case, it means our socioeconomic status, ethnicity, religion, sex, age, physical condition, or any other trait we possess neither negates nor contributes to our worth as image-bearers of God. Everyone has been created by God and for God.

Let me stress that human life is inherently sacred by virtue of our creation, and because it is sacred, protecting human life is imperative. God expresses this point plainly in Genesis 9 when he says, ā€œWhoever sheds the blood of man, by man shall his blood be shed, for God made man in his own imageā€ (Ge 9:6). It is wrong to kill an image-bearer of God because he is an image-bearer of God.
