Behold, children are a heritage from the LORD,
the fruit of the womb a reward.
Like arrows in the hand of a warrior
are the children of one’s youth.
Blessed is the man
who fills his quiver with them!
He shall not be put to shame
when he speaks with his enemies in the gate. (Psalm 127:3-5)
Children are a gift from God. They are his prized possession, which he shares with us. They are not a curse, an inconvenience, an interruption, or a liability. They are blessings. Each and every child is a divine blessing, whom God lovingly knitted together in his or her mother’s womb (Ps 139:13).
Furthermore, we all have a responsibility to protect these children.
Give justice to the weak and the fatherless;
maintain the right of the afflicted and the destitute.
Rescue the weak and the needy;
deliver them from the hand of the wicked. (Psalm 82:3, 4)
Christ is coming again, and when he does, he will say to those who failed to defend the most weak and needy among us, “Truly, I say to you, as you did not do it to one of the least of these, you did not do it to me” (Ps 82:4; Mt 25:45). “And these people,” Scripture says, “will go away into eternal punishment, but the righteous into eternal life (Mt 25:46).
