Civility versus affirmation

There is a world of difference between civility and affirmation.

I pray I will always be civil even in the face of hostile opposition. Peter writes, Keep your conduct among the Gentiles honorable, so that when they speak against you as evildoers, they may see your good deeds and glorify God on the day of visitation (1Pe 2:12). God calls us to love others.

Affirmation is another matter. The fear of the LORD is hatred of evil, so I cannot affirm, condone, or approve of any sin or heresy (Pr 8:13). Love does not rejoice at wrongdoing, but rejoices with the truth (1Co 13:6). Again, God calls us to love others. To be clear, that means we cannot fulfill our calling and affirm someone’s sinful behavior at the same time.
