Who Are You, Politically Speaking?

  • I received an email from one listener this morning who is struggling to wrap his head around my political views. He asked, “Who are you, politically speaking? At times, you seem very conservative to me. Other times, you come across as nearly liberal. There are even times when it seems like you’re promoting anarchy. Which is it?”

Let me try and explain myself the best I can in the most simple terms possible. Of course, we have those on the left. Then, we have neoconservatives followed by paleoconservatives followed by libertarians and, last but not least, anarchists. I’m missing a few groups in there but that covers the basics.

As for me, when I talk about what I’d like to see happen in this country and I’m talking in terms of what realistically could happen, I’m usually presenting a sort of paleoconservative view. When I talk about what I’d like to see happen that could happen but chances are not great, I’m presenting a libertarian view with a Christian twist. When I am merely talking about ideals that realistically will never happen but I would like them to, I’m presenting a view that doesn’t even have a name. It may seem like I’m promoting anarchy at those times but it’s more like a theocracy. I mean, a true theocracy. Not a state-run or state-mandated religion type of theocracy. I’m talking about a nation actually governed by God rather than men. In my ideal world, there are no men in positions of authority outside of judges and temporary military leaders.

To put it another way, I am a Christian and a libertarian. I believe in maximum freedom. I believe people should be free to do whatever they want, even if it happens to be immoral, so long as they never do harm to another person’s life, liberty, or property. For everything else, let God be the judge as He once was for the nation of Israel in the Old Testament of the Bible–before they elected their first king, of course.

Ideally, I would like to see the United States adopt the system that Israel had. Realistically, I just hold to a pretty standard libertarian view. I hope that helps.
