What Do You Do When Creativity Block Strikes?

  • Some occupations require creativity. However, creativity can be a fleeting thing. Maybe volatile would be a better word for it. It comes and goes and when it comes, it can be a powerful force. It can also leave as quickly as it came.

As a church pastor, I have found creativity to be a valuable asset. Not to mention, its worth when it comes to blogging, podcasting, or designing. Unfortunately, there are just days when the creativity ain’t there. I can read, study, and take a stab at it anyway, but I often fall short. It can be very frustrating.

Everyone has different methods for dealing with creativity block. For me, it’s all about timing. I’ve always struggled with creativity in the morning. From the time I wake up until noonish, I usually find myself extremely motivated but lacking the creative juices needed to accomplish anything worthwhile. In the afternoon, my world turns upside down and I’m without motivation but lots of creativity. In the evening, the best of both come together and I can really get things done.

This presents a problem for me. I made the decision before I was married in August of last year that I would always get my work done by 5:30 so I could spend the evenings with my wife. This cuts right into my most productive time of day. Obviously, I need to find another way to defeat creativity block.

What do you do? What are your suggestions?
