The Return of David Wooderson

  • Do you remember David Wooderson played by Matthew McConaughey in the movie, Dazed and Confused? He was the older guy who was still hanging out with high school students. He would have been creepy if not for his sweet car and cool accent. Well, he’s back.

In a new music video by Butch Walker, Wooderson strolls into a dance club in slow motion with a pack of cigarettes rolled in his sleeve and wearing his Bob Marley tee and tight pants that made him the quintessential 1976 ladies man. It’s reminiscent his entrance into the Emporium in Dazed and Confused.

A few things have changed in the music video which do not include McConaughey’s appearance. He looks exactly the same. But the club looks less like a high school kids’ hangout and more like a shady bar/dance club. Wooderson’s character has been tweaked a bit. If his lip syncing wasn’t odd enough, just wait until he goes to town on the trumpet. Finally, the music is certainly not Bob Dylan. It sounds a lot more like “Come On Eileen” by Dexys Midnight Runners.

These days, I would never recommend anyone watch Dazed and Confused. I loved the film when I was in high school, but let’s be honest. It lacks a certain wholesome quality. In other words, it’s no family night movie. But it was a favorite of mine way back when. So, when I saw Wooderson reappear, I had to check it out for myself. In short, I was disappointed.

Then again, how could anyone be disappointed by the Wooderson character? After all, he’s most famous for uttering, “You know what I like about them high school girls? I get older. They stay the same age.”

Looking back, I am thankful to know my tastes have changed. I would rather sit and watch a rerun of Andy Griffith than watch a movie like Dazed and Confused. But, like it or not, this film was a part of my past.
