Gospel Plow

New Series: Gospel Plow In recent weeks, I’ve offered my harmony of the Gospels as an email series. Readers, however, have discovered a couple of minor inconveniences. Dedication to Theophilus It seemed good to me to write an orderly account for you, most excellent Theophilus, that you may have certainty concerning the things you have been taught. The Word Became Flesh In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. He was in the beginning with God. All things were made through him. The Genealogy of Jesus: Joseph’s Lineage The book of the genealogy of Jesus Christ, the son of David, the son of Abraham. The Genealogy of Jesus Christ: Mary’s Lineage Jesus, being the son (as was supposed) of Joseph. Birth of John the Baptist Foretold Do not be afraid, Zechariah, for your prayer has been heard, and your wife Elizabeth will bear you a son, and you shall call his name John. Birth of Jesus Foretold And behold, you will conceive in your womb and bear a son, and you shall call his name Jesus. He will be great and will be called the Son of the Most High. Mary Visits Elizabeth Blessed are you among women, and blessed is the fruit of your womb! And why is this granted to me that the mother of my Lord should come to me? The Birth of John the Baptist And immediately his mouth was opened and his tongue loosed, and he spoke, blessing God. And fear came on all their neighbors. Zechariah’s Prophecy Blessed be the Lord God of Israel, for he has visited and redeemed his people and has raised up a horn of salvation for us in the house of his servant David. The Birth of Jesus Christ Do not fear to take Mary as your wife, for that which is conceived in her is from the Holy Spirit. She will bear a son, and you shall call his name Jesus. The Shepherds and the Angels The shepherds said to one another, “Let us go over to Bethlehem and see this thing that has happened, which the Lord has made known to us.” Jesus Presented at the Temple Behold, this child is appointed for the fall and rising of many in Israel, and for a sign that is opposed, so that thoughts from many hearts may be revealed. The Visit of the Wise Men Go and search diligently for the child, and when you have found him, bring me word, that I too may come and worship him. The Flight To Egypt Rise, take the child and his mother, and flee to Egypt, and remain there until I tell you, for Herod is about to search for the child, to destroy him. The Return To Nazareth Rise, take the child and his mother and go to the land of Israel, for those who sought the child’s life are dead. The Boy Jesus In the Temple After three days they found him in the temple, sitting among the teachers, listening to them and asking them questions. And all who heard him were amazed. John the Baptist Prepares the Way The word of God came to John the son of Zechariah in the wilderness. And he went into all the region around the Jordan, proclaiming a baptism of repentance. The Baptism of Jesus And when Jesus was baptized, immediately he went up from the water, and behold, the heavens were opened to him, and he saw the Spirit of God descending. The Temptation of Jesus And Jesus, full of the Holy Spirit, returned from the Jordan and was led by the Spirit in the wilderness. And he was in the wilderness forty days. The Testimony of John the Baptist Behold, the Lamb of God, who takes away the sin of the world! This is he of whom I said, ‘After me comes a man who ranks before me.’ Jesus Calls the First Disciples One of the two who heard John speak and followed Jesus was Andrew, Simon Peter’s brother. He found his own brother Simon and said, “We found the Messiah.” Jesus Calls Philip and Nathanael We have found him of whom Moses in the Law and also the prophets wrote, Jesus of Nazareth, the son of Joseph. The Wedding at Cana This, the first of his signs, Jesus did at Cana in Galilee, and manifested his glory. And his disciples believed in him. Jesus Cleanses the Temple And making a whip of cords, he drove them all out of the temple, with the sheep and oxen. And he poured out the coins of the money-changers. You Must Be Born Again Truly, truly, I say to you, unless one is born of water and the Spirit, he cannot enter the kingdom of God. That which is born of the Spirit is spirit. John the Baptist Exalts Christ He who comes from above is above all. He who is of the earth belongs to the earth and speaks in an earthly way. He who comes from heaven is above all. Jesus and the Woman of Samaria Everyone who drinks of this water will be thirsty again, but whoever drinks of the water that I will give him will never be thirsty again. Jesus Begins His Ministry From that time Jesus began to preach, saying, “The time is fulfilled, and the kingdom of God is at hand; repent and believe in the gospel.” Jesus Heals an Official’s Son The father knew that was the hour when Jesus had said to him, “Your son will live.” And he himself believed, and all his household. Jesus Calls Four Disciples And Jesus said to Simon, “Do not be afraid; from now on you will be catching men. Follow me, and I will make you fishers of men.” Jesus Heals a Man with an Unclean Demon “What is this? A new teaching with authority! He commands even the unclean spirits, and they obey him.” And at once his fame spread everywhere. Jesus Heals Many All those who had any who were sick with various diseases brought them to him, and he laid his hands on every one of them and healed them. Jesus Ministers to Great Crowds Let us go on to the next towns. I must preach the good news of the kingdom of God to the other towns as well; for I was sent for this purpose. Jesus Heals a Paralytic The scribes were sitting there, questioning in their hearts, “Why does this man speak like that? He is blaspheming! Who can forgive sins but God alone?” Jesus Calls Levi And as he passed by, he saw Levi the son of Alphaeus sitting at the tax booth, and he said to him, “Follow me.” And leaving everything, he rose and followed him. A Question About Fasting Can the wedding guests fast while the bridegroom is with them? As long as they have the bridegroom with them, they cannot fast. Jesus Is Lord of the Sabbath Have you not read in the Law how on the Sabbath the priests in the temple profane the Sabbath and are guiltless? Something greater than the temple is here. A Man with a Withered Hand And Jesus said to them, “I ask you, is it lawful on the Sabbath to do good or to do harm, to save life or to destroy it?” But they were silent. God’s Chosen Servant Behold, my servant whom I have chosen, my beloved with whom my soul is well pleased. I will put my Spirit upon him, and he will proclaim justice to Gentiles. The Beatitudes Seeing the crowds, [Jesus] went up on the mountain, and when he sat down, his disciples came to him. And he lifted up his eyes on his disciples. Salt and Light You are the light of the world. A city set on a hill cannot be hidden. No one after lighting a lamp covers it with a jar or puts it under a bed. Christ Came to Fulfill the Law Do not think that I have come to abolish the Law or the Prophets; I have not come to abolish them but to fulfill them. Anger So if you are offering your gift at the altar and there remember that your brother has something against you, leave your gift there before the altar and go. Lust I say to you that everyone who looks at a woman with lustful intent has already committed adultery with her in his heart. Divorce I say to you that everyone who divorces his wife, except on the ground of sexual immorality, makes her commit adultery. Oaths Do not take an oath at all, either by heaven, for it is the throne of God, or by the earth, for it is his footstool, or by Jerusalem. Love Your Enemies Love your enemies, do good to those who hate you, bless those who curse you, pray for those who abuse you, so that you may be sons of your Father. Giving to the Needy Beware of practicing your righteousness before other people in order to be seen by them, for then you will have no reward from your Father who is in heaven. Prayer and Fasting But when you pray, go into your room and shut the door and pray to your Father who is in secret. And your Father who sees in secret will reward you. Judging Others Judge not, and you will not be judged; condemn not, and you will not be condemned; forgive, and you will be forgiven. A Tree and Its Fruit Enter by the narrow gate. For the gate is wide and the way is easy that leads to destruction, and those who enter by it are many. Build Your House on the Rock Everyone who comes to me and hears my words and does them, I will show you what he is like: he is like a man building a house. Jesus Heals a Centurion’s Servant I tell you, with no one in Israel have I found such faith. I tell you, many will come from east and west and recline at table with Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob. Jesus Cleanses a Leper See that you say nothing to anyone, but go, show yourself to the priest and offer for your cleansing what Moses commanded, for a proof to them. Jesus Raises a Widow’s Son Fear seized them all, and they glorified God, saying, “A great prophet has arisen among us!” and “God has visited his people!” Messengers from John the Baptist Tell John what you have seen: the blind receive their sight and the lame walk, lepers are cleansed and the deaf hear, and the dead are raised up. A Sinful Woman Forgiven I tell you, her sins, which are many, are forgiven—for she loved much. But he who is forgiven little, loves little. Women Accompanying Jesus Soon afterward [Jesus] went on through cities and villages, proclaiming and bringing the good news of the kingdom of God. And the twelve were with him. Jesus’ Mother and Brothers Here are my mother and my brothers! For whoever does the will of my Father in heaven is my brother and sister and mother. The Parable of the Sower Behold, a sower went out to sow. And as he sowed, some seed fell along the path, and was trampled underfoot, and the birds of the air devoured it. The Purpose of the Parables To you it has been given to know the secrets of the kingdom of heaven, but to them it has not been given. This is why I speak to them in parables. The Parable of the Sower Explained Do you not understand this parable? How then will you understand all the parables? Now the parable is this. The Parable of the Weeds The kingdom of heaven may be compared to a man who sowed good seed in his field, but while his men were sleeping, his enemy came and sowed weeds. The Mustard Seed and the Leaven The kingdom of God is as if a man should scatter seed on the ground. He sleeps and rises night and day, and the seed sprouts and grows; he knows not how. The Parable of the Weeds Explained The one who sows the good seed is the Son of Man. The field is the world, and the good seed is the sons of the kingdom. More Parables About the Kingdom The kingdom of heaven is like treasure hidden in a field, which a man found and covered up. In his joy he goes and sells all that he has and buys that field. Jesus Calms a Storm And a windstorm came down on the lake, and behold, there arose a great storm on the sea, and the waves were breaking into the boat. Jesus Heals a Man with a Demon What have you to do with me, Jesus, Son of the Most High God? I adjure you by God, do not torment me. Have you come here to torment us before the time? Jesus Heals a Woman and Jairus’s Daughter Why are you making a commotion and weeping? Do not weep. Go away, for the girl is not dead but sleeping. Jesus Heals Two Blind Men When he entered the house, the blind men came to him, and Jesus said to them, “Do you believe that I am able to do this?” Jesus Heals a Man Unable to Speak And when the demon had been cast out, the mute man spoke. And the crowds marveled, saying, “Never was anything like this seen in Israel.” The Death of John the Baptist For John had been saying to Herod, “It is not lawful for you to have your brother’s wife.” And though he wanted to put him to death, he feared the people. The Healing at the Pool on the Sabbath One man was there who had been an invalid for thirty-eight years. When Jesus saw him lying there, he said to him, “Do you want to be healed?” The Authority of the Son This was why the Jews were seeking all the more to kill him, because not only was he breaking the Sabbath, but he was making himself equal with God. Witnesses to Jesus If I alone bear witness about myself, my testimony is not true. There is another who bears witness about me, and his testimony is true. Jesus Sends Out the Twelve Apostles And he called to him his twelve disciples and gave them authority over unclean spirits, to cast them out, and to heal every disease and every affliction. Herod Is Perplexed by Jesus Now Herod the tetrarch heard about the fame of Jesus [and] all that was happening, for Jesus’ name had become known. He was perplexed. Jesus Feeds the Five Thousand Taking the five loaves and the two fish, he said a blessing and broke the loaves and gave them to the disciples to set before the people. Jesus Walks on Water And about the fourth watch of the night, when they had rowed about three or four miles, they saw Jesus walking on the sea and coming near the boat. I Am the Bread of Life Unless you eat the flesh of the Son of Man and drink his blood, you have no life in you. Whoever feeds on my flesh and drinks my blood has eternal life. The Words of Eternal Life Lord, to whom shall we go? You have the words of eternal life, and we have believed, and have come to know, that you are the Holy One of God. Traditions and Commandments For the Pharisees and all the Jews do not eat unless they wash their hands properly, holding to the tradition of the elders.
