Facebook Refuses To Play Nice
-
It seems lots of people have a great love or a great hate for Facebook. I fall into neither camp. As far as I’m concerned, Facebook is a tool. For each person, it’s either useful or it’s not.
There are aspects to the social networking giant I like and some I don’t care for so much. The biggest advantage is that almost everyone I know is on it. It’s great for contacting people especially when I don’t have their phone number or email. However, it has some disadvantages too. I used to think threaded comments was one of its better features, but I’ve begun to notice more and more conversations that look something like this…
SOPA Conversation on Facebook
Frankly, I could do without. Plus, Facebook has always discouraged users from expanding their networks. We are given stern warnings whenever we try to befriend people we don’t personally know. Well, I like to meet new people. I can always call or email the people I already know. The limited networking capabilities on Facebook also creates an unseemly environment where people, thinking they are only sharing updates with close personal friends and family, post all kinds of things better left private.
Long story short, I have toyed with the idea of leaving Facebook all together. I even announced that as my plan this past December. I couldn’t pull the trigger though. There are too many good folks on Facebook and lots of them are not on my preferred social networking site, Twitter. I sought a happy medium solution.
Buffer App seemed to fit the bill. I could use it for very practical reasons on Twitter, such as spacing my tweets throughout the day, while also posting the same updates and links to Facebook. But, of course, Facebook refuses to play nice. I would consistently get error messages on Buffer telling me Facebook would not accept my post for one reason or another. I’m not sure if the blame falls on Buffer or Facebook. Either way, Buffer ceased to be an option.
As a matter of fact, Facebook won’t play nice with any of the apps or tools I use. It doesn’t work well with Buffer or TweetDeck. It won’t allow me to easily organize friends like Twitter (I primarily use SocialBro for organization). Needless to say, Facebook is a great social tool but maybe not for me and my purposes.
So, I’m back to syncing Twitter with Facebook. Twitter allows me to cross-post updates to Facebook. That’s my solution for the time being. Articles I link to will not have the nice-looking thumbnails, but oh well. Occasionally, I’ll venture to the Facebook website to see what’s going on and read my notifications, but let’s face it, I prefer Twitter.

DunrobinMacdhai I'd like to be more involved on Google+ but I've waiting for their network to be incorporated into some of the tools/apps I use.
jeremysarber I use Google Reader to follow a few hundred blogs and news sites, and since they blended Google+ into Reader I've started using it a lot more, Twitter is still my primary means of sharing links to stories, though.

I dislike Facebook for similar reasons, but I do like the Christian Libertarians group there so I keep it. I rarely actually post anything to my Wall other than cross-postings from Twitter. I actually probably post more on Google+ than I do on Facebook.
