Automatically Send Tweets to Google+

  • I have finally figured it out, folks. I have been wanting to share content on Google+ since they launched, but I wanted to do so with the convenience I have on Twitter and Facebook. Google+ has no API with writing permissions so Buffer, Hootsuite, TweetDeck and all of the other tools I’ve used are rendered useless. However, I have found a way to automatically post tweets to Google+.

First, you’ll need a Google Voice number as well as a Gmail account. Go to your Google Voice account and then settings. Under the Voicemail and Text tab, turn on text forwarding (forward to your Gmail address).

Second, click the red Text button on the left side of the screen. Send a text message to the number, 33669. You may need to refresh your Google Voice inbox but you’ll receive a text reply which says, “Google+: Did not understand the request.”

Third, open your Gmail inbox. You should see an email with the same text as the reply you received in Google Voice. Copy the From email address. It’ll look something like this: 19165727237.33669.jdoUWsWVst@txt.voice.google.com (Your Google Voice number followed by the Google Plus text number followed by your “magic” code at txt.voice.google.com).

Fourth, go to your Google+ settings and add your Google Voice phone number. They’ll send you a verification code to your Google Voice inbox.

Fifth, sign up and create a new task at ifttt.com. (You can use this recipe I created as a shortcut.) Choose Twitter as your Trigger Channel (“if this”). Choose New tweet by you as the trigger. Choose Gmail as your Action Channel (“then that”). In the To line, paste the email address from step three. In the body field, enter: {{Text}} +public

Make sure your task has been saved and you’re done. Tweets will automatically post on Google+ from now on. Pretty cool, huh? The only downside is that you will also get an email every time your tweet is sent to Google+.

I've seen this method posted before, but I actually have no Voicemail and Text tab in my settings. Just a Voicemail tab with no text settings. I presume they've removed this feature since this method got out.

Nice article. Is there anyway I can direct my tweets to Google+ page instead of my G+ profile?

k_avinash I don't think there is yet, but I could be wrong. Search for something like "Update Google+ Page with SMS or text message" and see what you find. That's basically what's happening here. Tweets become text messages which become updates on Google+.
