Wordpress 2.8: Multiple Users with Same Email Address

Author: Jeremy Sarber | Filed under: Free Consultation

wordpress_logoIf you use Wordpress as your website’s CMS platform, you have probably noticed that Wordpress 2.8 is available now. I have a plug-in installed that allows me to automatically upgrade when an upgrade is available so I did not hesitate this morning to get it done. Little did I know until after the upgrade was that a feature I use extensively on another site of mine has been changed with version 2.8.

On the other site, I do not allow open registration since there is no need for it. I am the only who does any posting. I do, however, post articles and sermons from a number of different preachers. I prefer to post them under their own names rather than mine so I register new “authors” on the back-end of the site using my own email address for each of them. This has been a very convenient way to display a number of different authors without needing that many email addresses. When I used Joomla, this feature was much simpler because all I had to do was use the “author alias” option when posting. In Wordpress, creating a separate user for each author is the only way to accomplish this same thing.

As it turns out, Wordpress 2.8 does not allow multiple users to be registered (even from the back-end, logged in as the administrator) with the same email address. This makes sense because if registration was open to the public, you would not want people registering over and over with the same email address. But for my purposes, it’s not a welcoming change.

I am writing about this because there are likely folks out there with the same problem who have googled the issue and come up short just as I have. I have not found a solution as of yet but I am working on it. I have two posts in separate forums asking for help on this:

You can check those forums for responses or I will post the solution here if I discover one.

[UPDATE] The Allow Multiple Accounts plugin does not currently work in WP 2.8 if you thought that might be a potential solution.

[UPDATE] The creator of the Allow Multiple Accounts plugin is currently working on an update for 2.8. He says it should be ready within a few days.

[UPDATE] I found another plugin which isn’t the most convenient but it works. The Register Plus plugin allows users to register with a previously registered email address. As administrator, you’ll have to log out to register the new account. You will also need to allow users to register themselves in General Settings and click the “Allow new registrations to use an email address that has been previously registered” box in the Register Plus settings. If the Allow Multiple Accounts plugin gets updated, I’ll let you know.

  2. I’m looking for the same solution! Thanks for updating and bringing this issue to light…

  3. You’re welcome. I’m going to try a potential fix here in a minute. I’ll update the page if it works. I’ll update it again when the plugin gets updated.

  4. I was planing to update to Wordpress 2.8, but recently few of my clients reported lots of problems like
    Internal server Error
Broken Permalinks and broken theme issue..
    So for now
I will wait for some more reviews and issues before I will upgrade my blog to wordpress 2.8

  5. To be honest, I haven’t had any trouble with it other than the problem mentioned above.

  7. Jeremy, did you ever hear anything else about “Allow Multiple Accounts” plugin? I noticed on the page it says it is compatible w/ 2.7+… I was considering testing it out.

  11. Fantastic. Thank you.

  12. Thanks for the post and the updates! This was exactly my problem and now everything is at it should be. Thank you for the help.

  13. Are there any problems one might encounter if you have two admin users with the same email address?

  14. Not if you use the Allow Multiple Accounts plugin:

    http://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/allow-multipl...

It works the same for any type of user (admin, editor, etc.).

  15. Thank you for pointing out this plugin. It turned a headscratching problem with possible custom code patching to a simple 10 minutes resolution at work for an internal web site.
