Who am I?
I served in a not particularly distinguished way in the Illinois legislature, then for just two years in Congress. I spoke out against the war, but drew national attention because of a good speech or two. Then I became president.
The answer, of course: Abraham Lincoln, who opposed the Mexican-American War while in Congress. The key speeches bringing him to the national limelight were the 1854 “Peoria Speech” and 1858 “House Divided” speech.
By the way, here’s one of my favorite Teddy Roosevelt quotes about Lincoln: “”To discriminate against a thoroughly upright citizen because he belongs to some particular church, or because, like Abraham Lincoln, he has not avowed his allegiance to any church, is an outrage against that liberty of conscience which is one of the foundations of American life.” — letter to J. C. Martin, 9 November 1908
