Republicans Stay, Democrats Rush Off To Their Paid Vacation

WASHINGTON: The last vote in the House of Representatives before a vacation usually sparks a stampede toward the doors and waiting planes. Not so Friday, when Republicans occupied the House floor for a rare, and at times bizarre, protest against Democratic energy policies.
The microphones were off, the House had stopped television feeds and the lights dimmed after the vote to adjourn for the August recess. That did not deter Republicans, who one after another rose to demand that Congress stay in session until it does something about high gas prices in the U.S.
Democrats and, of course, Nancy Pelosi had blocked them from voting on more off-shore drilling before their 5-week vacation. (Who takes a 5-week break from their job? Oh, that’s right. School children.) I really don’t mind that Democrats have a different way of approaching the energy crisis. They can be wrong if they want to. But the way they fail to listen to the American people, the same people who got them elected, is ridiculous! We want to drill and use our own resources!
I applaud those Republican Congressmen who stayed in protest. I wish I could have seen it. I would have loved to hear Ted Poe shouting in the dark, “Madame Speaker, where art thou? Where oh where has Congress gone?” They even started inviting tourists in which would normally be strictly forbidden.
Representative Ander Crenshaw was absolutely right when he said, “Congress shouldn’t leave its business unfinished while American wallets are drained at the pump.” Amen, brother.
Mike Pence, an Indiana Hoosier, said, “Republicans will not go quietly. Let us demand that the president of the United States . . . call a special session of this Congress on energy.” Did you hear that Mr. President? Get those vacationing members of Congress back in there so they can deal with this. I help pay their salaries. They owe us all that much.
Republican Whip Roy Blunt said, “We need to have more sources of energy, use energy more efficiently and invest in the future…we want to have that debate. For whatever reason, the Democrat leaders of this Congress are afraid of those ideas.”

That was great, too bad it didn’t get any coverage.
I’m glad to see that the Republicans are finally talking about comprehensive energy legislation. They wasted 6 1/2 years and now want to point fingers at Democrats who’ve been in control of Congress a mere 18 months. Really? Do they think we’re that stupid? These last inning panders are insulting to our intelligence. True leaders are proactive, not reactive to politically changing winds. Watching these empty suits blathering on, trying to score political points, is really sickening. Empty rhetoric can’t get them off the hook for 6 1/2 years of failed leadership.
Republicans are using The Twitter from the House floor?!?! Wow, I’m so impressed by their tech savvy!
It is awfully sad for any Washingtonite to wait until gas prices are this high before becoming active in the energy crisis, but it’s been addressed now. I couldn’t care less about what’s happened in the past. I want to see something happening now. Anyone, and I mean anyone, Republican or Democrat, who stands in the way of doing what’s most logical (drilling our own oil) is the bad guy at this point. Right now, that happens to be Pelosi and her sidekicks in Congress.
