Cell Phones Popping Popcorn Is a Hoax

Have you seen these crazy videos of the cell phones placed around kernels of popcorn and, when called, the cell phones actually make the kernels pop? Scary, huh? Here’s one:

Is it true? Can cell phone radiation heat the moisture inside a kernel of popcorn enough to make it pop as if it were inside a microwave?

Absolutely not. These videos look cool and they certainly play to our love of all things supernatural, as well as our fear of evil microwaves, but they are a complete hoax. I’m guessing this was some basement geek’s joke to the world or possibly began as a marketing campaign. Either way, the science behind whether or not a cell phone could actually pop popcorn has quickly debunked the validity of the video.

There’s plenty more videos on YouTube which clearly show most people cannot duplicate the results of the few that seemingly show cell phones popping popcorn.
