DISCLAIMER: Before I begin, I would like to point out that I do not like to refer to different races with hyphens. The terms European-American, African-American, and the slew of other politically correct racial terms simply seem unecessary since one is either an American or not. Where a man’s ancestors came from do not necessarily dictate his race anyway. So I will refer to races by skin color, since that is a defining characteristic that determines race. Besides, I am in no way offended when I am referred to as white, because I am white, and there is nothing I could do about it anyway. That being said, I hope no one takes offense to my references.
One statistic that puzzles me in any election is the overwhelming percent of blacks that vote Democratic. Polls show that about ninety percent of blacks in the United States vote this way. As I became more interested in politics, I also became more intrigued by this fact, so I decided to analyze this phenomenon and was left without any real answers. In fact, it seems, by my logic, that a majority of blacks should be inclined to vote Republican.
Why? You ask.
First of all, the Democratic party, historically, has not stood up for black civil rights, and it wasn’t until the last couple of decades that it has considered itself the champion of promoting black equality. In fact, the Republican party was the first party to implement measures to give blacks more rights. Ever heard of Abraham Lincoln or the Emancipation Proclamation? Yes, he was the President who issued the Emancipation Proclamation which abolished slavery in states that were in rebellion against the Union. How about the 13th Amendment to the Constitution? He was the President who pushed for the creation of this amendment. It made slavery illegal thoughout the entire United States, unless slavery was issued as a punishment to persons convicted of a crime. To which party did Honest Abe belong? The GOP.
As stated earlier, in recent years the Dems have championed themselves as leaders in the racial equality arena. With leaders like the Reverends Jessie Jackson and Al Sharpton, who could disagree? I could. The things that have been done by Democrats and men like Jackson and Sharpton under the banner of minority advancement has done nothing but oppress real social advancement for blacks. When true black leaders like Bill Cosby stand up and urge blacks to do things that will actually benefit their race, like challenging black fathers to be responsible dads or discouraging teens from listening to rap music with explicitly vulgar lyrics, these self-proclaimed “black leaders” lash out and cry “racial trechery!” If Jackson, Sharpton, and other Dems were true promoters of black social advancement, they would join Cosby in his quest, or at least commend him for taking this stand.
Many Democrats resort to demagouery to make sure that they keep the majority of the black votes, making claims that the Republican party is full of bigots that will somehow take rights away from blacks and other minorities. This type of rhetoric only polarizes races even further and flames the fires of resentment. That’s a far cry from Dr. King’s dream of racial harmony. The Democratic platform also patronizes blacks in the lower class by claiming that the only way that they can become more affluent is to rely on the government and its programs which implies that they don’t have the ability to climb out of poverty on their own merit. This is a very racist view. But wait! I thought the Democrats were the ones who despised racism. I thought liberals were incapable of racist tendencies. And aren’t Republicans just a bunch of racists looking for the most efficient way to hold minorites down and keep them out of power? Well, not according to the facts.
The fact is that the Republican party has done more to promote social minority advancement than the Dems. President Bush put more minorites in higher positions of power than any president in history, even more than the “Skinny Santa” Bill Clinton. The Republican platform promotes social minority advancement through the push for personal accountability, responsibility, and independence. It’s kind of like the old adage: “Give a man a fish, and he’ll eat for a day. Teach a man to fish, and he’ll eat for a lifetime.” Besides, what is more gratifying than success through hard work.
I’m sure some liberal may somehow find this post to be a condescending racial piece of writing. On the contrary. I believe that blacks can, and many have, reach very high social prominence, because they have the ability and the right to do so. But the government will never bring a person from poverty to affluence through government programs. Bureaucracy is very good at one thing. Screwing things up.
So the next time you hear a Democrat say that the Republican platform is full of racism and only makes it harder for minorities to advance in society, remember what the Democratic platform and big goverment does for lower class minorities. It keeps them right where they are and dependent on their beloved Democrats to provide for them.
