In a surprising twist of the American Supreme Court saga, they managed to uphold the Constitution this time. The Second Amendment is safe for the time being with a 5-4 ruling. I rejoice for good news those few times we get it.
You might wonder why I think this is such good news. To be honest, I’ve never owned a gun (beyond a pellet gun when I was a kid). I have no real intentions to buy a gun at this point. I have friends and family who own guns, but I do not. I do, however, understand the Second Amendment and its purpose.
A well regulated Militia, being necessary to the security of a free State, the right of the people to keep and bear Arms, shall not be infringed.
2nd Amendment
Granted, there might be a comma problem in the text, but its meaning is as clear as day. People have a right to own and carry guns. Why? Considering the historical context of this writing, I’d say it’s so people can protect themselves from an overpowered government should the need ever arise. If you remember, that’s sort of how the United States was established.
If you think the Second Amendment only means the Militia should own guns, well, what’s a Militia? Does that mean only our military and national guards should have the guns? The Militia during the founding fathers’ day was not government-run armies. It was the good folks of America who grabbed their personal rifles when needed and fought for the sake of this country. I don’t think we should be planning a new revolution (yet), but if ever that day needs to come, I want the patriots of this country to own some guns.
The whole idea of the D.C. gun ban and “Gun Free” zones are essentially to protect Americans. Here’s what has always bothered me about that. The only ones who will continue to carry guns in these restricted areas are the criminals. The law-abiding citizens will be left defenseless while lunatics starting shooting up the place. Making more and more gun laws will not help. The crazies of the world don’t care a thing about the law. Those “Gun Free” zones only give them easy targets to kill multitudes without anyone being able to do anything about it. Protecting Americans? I don’t think so.
This Supreme Court ruling goes beyond just the gun issue. They actually upheld the Constitution! I can’t say I like how the Supreme Court has seemingly the final say on a political issue such as this, but at least they did the right thing this time. It’s a good thing they did too. Yesterday, they rejected giving child molesters the death penalty, but at least today they gave us back our guns. That way we can shoot those who molest our child. (I’m kidding, of course. Please do not shoot anyone. Though, if some creep did harm one of my own children and I knew some pantywaist judge was going to give him nothing more than a 60 day jail sentence, I might be tempted to buy a gun and use it. Seriously, don’t shoot anyone.)
