Detestable Religion | 106 Coffee & Cigarettes

  • Love or hate? For or against? Do you stand with us or against us?

Black or white are the choices we usually limit ourselves to. There can be no other option than black or white. For instance, if we watch the Why I Hate Religion But Love Jesus video floating around the Internet, most of us will either love it or hate and we then stand with those that feel the same or against those who differ.

Wouldn’t it be far less divisive to simple agree with the parts we agree with and disagree–kindly–with the parts we disagree with?

I agree for the most part. It is easy to be black and white. It was actually difficult to not be upset over the video and its popularity. I think he was trying to give his testimony of how he was just going through the motions of his faith until he had an encounter with Christ and then was able to leave behind his sin, or what he felt was his greatest sin. The issue with the video is that he bashes religion, when Christianity is a religion.

Atheists say that religion is evil and wrong and filled with hateful hypocrites. It's responsible for abuse of power, wars and is the enemy of free thought. What the response of this man and other Christians has been is to try to make the argument that it's a "relationship not a religion". Which sounds lovely. The issue is he's bashing Christianity using the same arguments the atheists do, but then saying he loves Christianity. It doesn't work.

@Above Ground Pools I understand and I really do agree. But, like you, I recognize his intentions as being good and sincere. He's misguided, but I more commented on the sheer hatred that has been thrown his way. We cannot defend Christianity by acting so contrary to what our faith teaches.

Thanks for the feedback.
